Take an aquatic adventure through the waters of the Noonu Atoll and discover the diversity of Maldivian marine life, guided by one of our Ocean Guardians. The Atoll-native sea turtles and rays may make a special appearance, as you experience the magnificence of life below the sea.

Non-Motorised Water Sports

We offer a range of complimentary non-motorised water sports, including kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, windsurfing, kite surfing, night paddleboarding and catamarans. Private tuition is available at an additional charge on an hourly basis.

Motorised Water Sports

Experience the ocean with complete freedom. Gliding, diving, skimming – all of this is possible with a SEABOB. Learn to move through the water like a fish, on the surface and beneath the waves.

What happens if you fit a surfboard with a motor? You get an eSurf-board. The eSurf lets you get up to speeds of 56km per hour, making this an exhilarating water sport.

Eco-Friendly Surfing

Discover and secret surf breaks in the Noonu Atoll accompanied by our surf instructor or guides. All surf breaks are between 5 and 35 minutes from Soneva Jani by speedboat. Surf season is dependent on Mother Nature’s mood, although it does peak from May - September. Waves range from waist to head height. All equipment is eco-friendly and made from recycled wasted, making us the first fully sustainable surfing programme in the world.

Soneva in Aqua Day Experience

After your on-shore breakfast, the captain and crew will welcome you aboard Soneva in Aqua and set sail for some of the best snorkelling spots in the Maldives. Keep your eyes peeled for turtles, dolphins and possibly manta rays (*season and weather dependent). Enjoy a bespoke lunch menu on-board, prepared by your personal chef.

After lunch, grab your fins, mask and snorkel for some underwater sightseeing in some of the best spots in the area, followed by some hard earned relaxation time in the sun or in our outdoor Jacuzzi. Enjoy a personalised treatment of your choice from our on-board massage therapist. As the sun sets, lie in our bowsprit nets and search for playing dolphins. The chef will prepare canapés and pop the sparkling wine upon your return to Soneva Jani.

Kuredu Private Guided Snorkelling

Discover the thriving corals of Kureddu, also known as Turtle Reef, on a fascinating private snorkelling tour with our resident Marine Biologist. This living ecosystem is home to a vibrant array of tropical species, including shoals of colourful reef fish and rare sea turtles.

Kuredu Snorkel  

Explore life beyond the Noonu Atoll and discover the diversity of the popular diving site at Kuredu Island, known for its frequently observed, green sea turtles. Before setting off from the beautiful shores of Soneva Jani, join us for a special presentation to discover more about the sea turtles of the Maldives, and the work of the Olive Ridley Project - including our partnership with the organisation. Then, explore the ocean with our resident Sea Turtle Biologist, or one of our Ocean Guardians, who will guide you along the beautiful reef and offer an insight into the life of sea turtles.

Hanifaru Bay Snorkel   

Take a journey with our Ocean Guardians to the Hanifaru Bay Marine Protected Area in the Baa Atoll, one of the world's most famous manta ray hotspots.

We will search for the enigmatic, inquisitive and charismatic manta rays that can reach a vast wingspan of up to three metres. When time and tide align, fortunate snorkelers may observe a rolling, whirling feeding frenzy - where hundreds of these large, yet harmless, creatures congregate to gorge themselves on the plankton-rich waters.

The manta season at Hanifaru Bay runs between June and October where the plankton will be pushed to the eastern side of the atoll. Please note, manta sightings are frequent but not guaranteed.

Coral Planting     

Coral reef ecosystems are the backbone of the Coral Cay island nations like the Maldives – these biological hotspots, referred to as the ‘rainforests of the sea’, provide a plethora of ecosystem services to coastal communities.

However, these ecosystems are under threat from the effects of marine heatwaves, pollution and overfishing. Join our Ocean Guardians in assisting our coral propagation programme, and learn more about these dynamic ecosystems, including the threats they face and the initiatives to help save them. We will start by attaching coral fragments to your own coral frame before snorkelling the frame out to find its new home. Your corals will be under the watchful eyes of our Ocean Guardians, who will send you updates on their progress every six months.

Turtle on Call     

Get a glimpse into the lives of some of the Maldives' sea turtles with the help of our Sea Turtle Biologist or Ocean Guardian. Don't miss your chance to see a mother turtle lay her eggs in the sand, watch tiny hatchlings make their way to the ocean, or come to the aid of turtles who need assistance. Please let your Barefoot Guardian know so they can add your name to the Turtle on Call register.

Soneva Academy – Marine Life of the Maldives     

In this course we will dive into the world under the waves - finding out what are coral reefs, and how do they impact our lives? Learn all about the fascinating life on the reef, how it is currently under threat and what we can do to help.

Duration: 6 hours (2 hours per module)

Marine Conservation Expedition

To truly understand the fragility of coral reefs in our oceans and how you can help better protect them, join our Ocean Guardians on a number of tasks. Under their guidance, you will take part in a beach clean-up, followed by a micro-plastic survey, coral watch survey, and a snorkel session.

Guided Snorkel at the Coral Restoration Site  

Be guided by one of our Ocean Guardians around our Coral Garden. Here you’ll see widespread interlocking MAARS reef stars covered by beautiful coral colonies that grow and thrive, after being securely attached to these reef stars by our guests and hosts. MARRS (Mars Assisted Reef Restoration System) is developed by Mars Incorporated, which has been actively engaging in and identifying solutions to reverse the long-term degradation of coral reefs. You will be able to see how these coral colonies provide a safe habitat and food for many different species of marine life over the years to come.

Night Snorkeling       

Once the sun has set below the horizon and darkness starts to fill the sky, the vibrant and colourful marine life that enlivens our coral reefs during the day is slowly replaced by an incredible array of nocturnal reef-dwelling creatures. Join our Ocean Guardians as you set off into the lagoon to look for these enthralling nocturnal animals.

Snorkeling Lesson         

Have your first introduction to the underwater world with our Ocean Guardians, where you’ll familiarise yourself with snorkelling gear and learn the skills that will help you enjoy your first snorkel experience. This will take place in a shallow lagoon so you can fully embrace the experience in a safe location. Be sure to look out for all the beautiful marine life below the surface.

Coral Planting and Snorkel Lesson Package         

Make your first snorkel an unforgettable experience. Be introduced to the beautiful underwater world with a snorkel lesson and then assist our Ocean Guardians in our Coral Rejuvenation efforts. You will attach coral fragments to your own coral frame before snorkelling the frame out to find its new home in our Coral Garden. Your corals will be under the watchful eyes of our Ocean Guardians who will send you updates on their progress every six months.
